“A happy family is but an earlier heaven.” —George Bernard Shaw
Up on the San Francisco Peaks is a little area known as Aspen Corner. With its towering aspen trees, lush ferns, purple lupine flowers, and yellow forget-me-nots, you can see why it’s a favorite location for family photos. In the summer it’s a lush greenery wonderland, and in the fall, a yellow sea of aspen leaves. This is by far, one of my favorite places to take families for their family photo sessions.
But Aspen corner is also the starting point of some great mountain biking routes that fly through aspen trees, cut across alpine meadows, and skirt the base of looming peaks–all at high elevation that will keep the lungs pumping. These trails are also perfect for hikers and runners. There are multiple route options of various length and difficulty, but the most popular for mountain bikes is an out-and-back single track of up to 14 miles round trip. Bring your bike or hiking shoes and make it a family portrait and adventure day!
How to get to Aspen Corner:
From Downtown Flagstaff, take US-180/Fort Valley Road for about 7 miles. Turn right on Snowbowl Road and go 5½ miles to the parking area for Aspen Corner. In the summer and fall, this area is very crowded, so plan for extra time to park.
